With the creation of Starfleet in the 2120s, the city was chosen as the orginization's head quarters.

Early History[]

As of 3000 BC, local Native American tribes had inhabited the area around the San Francisco Bay, and in 1776 the Spanish colonizers of California set up a fort and the Mission San Francisco de Asís. Upon independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico. Decades later in 1850, it then became part of the United States when California was annexed and promoted to state hood. The area grew considerably due to the discovery of gold in the American River of Northern California. In 1906, the city was devastated by a large earth quake and subsequent fire. However, it continued to grow and become one of the most prominent and easily recognizeable American cities in the 20th and 21st centuries.
